I’m gonna write a pretty female-centric novel for this year’s NaNoWriMo. So for this OC-tober, I decided to choose my favorite female OCs from everything I’ve written. Everything. From way back in ye olde days. Even the embarrassing ones. I thought it would be good to have a look back to see how much I’ve changed when writing/designing female characters through the years. So!

OC-tober #01: Selene
“Fairy tales are fiction. But happiness isn’t. And I am happy. Thank you.”

I wrote about Selene in 2007. She was my first heroine. Her story was a pretty simple novella. It was badly-written. By 14-year-old-Ali. By hand. On a notebook which got passed among the other girls in my class after I’ve finished a chapter. And being the high school girls that we were, we actually loved Selene’s story about dancing and choosing the people who love you and learning to love yourself and making choices for yourself.

So damn maybe my first try wasn’t bad at all.

OC-tober #02: Lilith
“I thought that it was hard to get a taste of heaven, but what I didn’t know was that I’ve been getting some everyday.”

For OC-tober 2016, I’m having a look back at my fave female OCs from everything I’ve written through the years.

I made Lilith around 2009. She is sweet, optimistic, loyal, determined (read: Hufflepuff) and… well, she’s fast. Literally. That’s her perk. She’s a literal speed demon. The short story actually wasn’t her story per se. My protag was this tall dark and brooding fallen angel with cursed red eyes not Sasuke I swear and she was his love interest. Their story was about a cursed fallen angel and a demon who was too good for hell. ALI HAD AN EDGE PHASE. JUDGE HER NOW. Also they look like teenagers. Why. It wasn’t well thought-out. Oh my dear Satan it all sounds embarrassing bury me now. BURY ME. LET ME HIDE IN SHAME.

The edge phase wasn’t that edgy, anyway. They lived happily ever after! >.<)g

OC-tober #03: Quinn and Ara
“Don’t worry about me. You guys raised me to be tough, remember?”
“Yes. Of course I remember.”

For OC-tober 2016, I’m having a look back at my fave female OCs from everything I’ve written through the years.

Quinn and Ara are part of my Project DIY series. I first wrote about them around 2010 and until now I still get some snippets for them occasionally. They’re just this family living and breathing in my head being all fluffy and domestic and shit.

Ara grew up never having met her bio-mom, but in exchange, she got 5 parents. Ara and Quinn are one of my favorite parent-child relationships that I’ve written. Quinn never met Ara’s bio-mom, but she’s convinced that the woman had made the biggest mistake in her life, because Ara is a precious perfect little girl who deserves the world. And if you ask Ara why she grew up to be strong and independent, she’ll say that she got it not from her four dads, but from her one mom.

OC-tober #04: Ayumi & Shana
“Uhhhhh… tell me, Shana – are you sure you don’t have a type? Because this latest one fits your usual.”
“What? What type?”
“Handsome but always frowning, smart but rude, talented but a jerk, and never good enough for you.”
“What.”
“What.”

OC-tober #05: Suika & Kairi
“I won’t say ‘you complete me’, but I can say that without you, there’s a pretty good piece of my life missing.”
“Well then, it’s a good thing I have no plans to take that piece away.”

For OC-tober 2016, I’m having a look back at my fave female OCs from everything I’ve written through the years. These girls and I go way back since 2010. >:D

Once upon a time, Ali tried to write something inspired by shoujo manga. These four ladies are from that story which had like a dozen working titles and then I dropped it because I thought it was HORRIBLE and now I just call it “The Cancelled RomCom”. That was around 2009 to 2010 too. But hey I said I’m gonna pick faves from EVERYTHING I’ve written, no exceptions and huuuh, I actually love quite a lot of characters from that thing. And they’re this four!

Ayumi and Shana were made when I was obsessed with Nana. OMG NANA. So now you can see how they got the ‘polar opposites’ dynamic. Both of them are musicians: Ayumi is the guitarist of a punk rock band and Shana is a pianist playing classical music. Shana has lots of boy problems. And Ayumi never gets tired of telling her best friend that she’s too good for all of them. Now that I think about it, Ayumi is probably ace. I never thought of that back then.

Kairi was my first trans OC! That’s why I’m so fond of her. She’s a lesbian transgirl while Suika is bisexual and they have a really cute relationship and it’s my first time to write slow burn and I didn’t even know it was called slow burn. They’re both members of Ayumi’s band – on violin and keyboard/vocals. Ayumi came in practice one day and took one look at them and went “Wait are you guys in love? You look in love. wtf.”

OC-tober #06: Ragine
“Contrary to popular belief, I actually have friends. They aren’t the best people in the world but I like to think that everyone existing are failures of some sort, anyway.”

OC-tober #07: Max & Thea
“Thea’s not into you. Thea’s not into guys. Thea’s into me. Right, Thea?”
“…um. Yup. That sounds right.”

For OC-tober 2016: a look back at my fave female OCs from everything I’ve written through the years. This time, these are girls from my first ever NaNoWriMo novel: Kaledrina, 2010.

This novel is my first time using my favorite ‘one song per chapter’ style – and I used songs by The Dresden Dolls.

Ragine is the MC and the narrator. She’s a skeptic, has dealt with a lot of shit from her family at such a young age, but she’s dealing with it. At eighteen, she and her brother moved out their main house to live together in an old cozy apartment. The novel is about her writing stuff about the quirky neighbors in their little building. She’s an artist-turned-librarian-and-maybe-trying-to-be-a-writer. Ragine is hard-of-hearing, usually using hearing aids to hear and sign language to communicate. Because she’s often quiet, people tend to regard her as shy, but her closest friends know how witty and snarky she can be.

Max and Thea are #TeamSexy live across the hall, and Ragine calls them the ‘resident party animals’. While this is true and she didn’t think they’d get along at first, Ragine warmed up to them eventually. Max is a hard-working upstanding working college student on a scholarship, and Thea, despite being the clumsiest person alive, juggles several part-time jobs too. Their personalities clash sometimes, and one of them usually ends up sulking at Ragine’s place before going back home to make up with each other.

OC-tober #08: Elise
“I have a wonderful husband, a perfect son with that husband, a brilliant wife, a perfect daughter with that wife, my badass grandma, and an awesome half-half-brother. I’m telling you, whatever’s up with your family, mine will still be weirder.”

OC-tober #09: Vivienne
“Why did you have to pay the price, Vivi?”
“Maybe because I can pay it. And still say that it’s a small price, compared to losing you.”

For OC-tober 2016: a look back at my fave female OCs from everything I’ve written through the years. These two are from an old novel that I finished but I probably will never edit, called ‘Thunder’, circa 2011. I kinda scrapped this one away, too – but not before getting attached to two special ladies 😀

Weirdly enough, my faves from this series doesn’t include the MC. One of my realizations by the time I finished writing that story is that my lead characters are weak as fuck. The side characters stole the story too much.

Elise is my female MC’s best friend – tough as nails, no-nonsense but sensitive, passionate, incredibly supportive and wise. Elise is responsible for slapping some sense in my MC’s head. Both MC’s. She’s awesome like that. Elise is my first character to be in a polyamorous relationship. Her dynamic with both her partners is still one of my faves.

Vivi is another side character. She’s a model-slash-writer and in many ways a parallel to Elise. She’s a confidante to my male MC – more on the good cop side, all gentle comfort and soothing words, but just as effective. She’s cheerful and optimistic and is in some way a glue for the other characters to stick together. “Do it for Vivi.” is a recurring line in the story. She was in an accident that cost her her voice, and this put a strain to her relationship with her on-again off-again fiancee because they somehow blame themselves for what happened. They resolve it eventually tho.

OC-tober #10: Leonora, Odessa & Grieta
“The Waldgrave sisters, have you heard the prophecy about them? They say someday one would burn the house down to the ground, one would die trying to stop her, and the last would watch helpless as it all happens.”

OC-tober #11: Edlin
“Trust me, mistress – if he ever falls for you? I’d risk my own life to save yours.”

OC-tober #12: Tamara & Lucina
“This is your plan, to send me to the front lines?”
“Yes. But you can refuse, if you want to.”
“Hell no. It’s your plan. It’s a perfect plan.”

OC-tober #13: Alecto
“I always play fair. And I always win. So maybe you should be afraid of me, after all.”

For OC-tober 2016: a look back at my fave female OCs from everything I’ve written through the years. I started ‘Debauchery on Death’ back in 2010. I had a whole complicated set of characters for it… and i finished five long chapters… and then I found out about Game of Thrones and my life was ruined because “well fuck so it’s been done before”. Also GoT had “The women are the strong ones, truly.” and I had lines like that in my story goddammit. And just like that all my enthusiasm seemed to vanish! And it was dropped! But dammit I do like the characters and I’d like to at least use them in a different story someday. 😀

Leonora, Odessa and Grieta are daughters of an old noble family of necromancers (the main story is partly inspired by the Old Kingdom books). Leonora is the eldest daughter: obedient, strict and plays-by-the-rules. Odessa, the story’s MC, is the rebellious, more mischievous middle child. Grieta is the gentle and kind-hearted youngest sister. Unlike her sisters, she is more healer than fighter. When Odessa breaks the rules (by using necromancy to revive The Dead Boyfriend) and kicks the plot off, her sisters try to bring her around and stop her from further shenanigans. Leonora wants to cast her off, while Grieta wants her to come home. Drama ensues. I never did find out how it all ends. :

Edlin is another noble daughter. Her family specialized in healing and water magic. She’s a brilliant archer and magician, and in the story she comes into play when her master, Odessa’s fiancee, assigns her to be Odessa’s aide. They didn’t like each other at first, but soon they learn to trust and protect each other.

A feud happens between noble families, each of them picking a side and having a sort of civil war. Tamara and Lucina are in one side of this. Tamara is their side’s best fighter. Lucina, while also a formidable fighter in her own right, has a mind sharper than her sword, so she mostly does command and strategy. They’re a power couple and dammit I love them soooo muuuuch.

Alecto is on the other side! She’s supposed to be a match for Tamara, with fire magic and combat skills etc etc. She’s fierce and always battle-ready and what I love about her is while she came from a family whose members are not above using whatever dirty tricks they can to win fights, Alecto holds honor and fairness above all. Like in the quote – she always plays fair and she always wins, and in a game of cheap tactics and dirty play, that’s something to fear.

OC-tober #14: Eclisse
“This damsel is not in distress, dear prince, thank you very much.”

For OC-tober 2016: a look back at my fave female OCs from everything I’ve written through the years. This didn’t have a title but there’s a little story I thought about way back around 2011 and never got to finish.

Eclisse is the main protag of that story. It was supposed to be a short fairy tale about a princess under a sleeping curse where she only wakes up at the stroke of midnight and falls asleep after an hour. She and her parents are waiting for someone with true love’s kiss – but unfortunately she doesn’t think anyone has fallen in love with her yet. Until one midnight she decides to be mischievous, drags her maid and librarian best friend with her to go exploring in the forest, gets lost, runs into a prince asking for directions, and they kiss by pure accident.

The spell is broken. And when they questioned the curse, they realize that it wasn’t worded to be ‘true love’s kiss’. Just a ‘kiss on the lips’. And she’s pissed because “After all this time I could have just kissed anyone and solved the problem myself wtf?!?!” So now she and Prince-kun deals with the aftermath because… well… she’s a princess and he’s a prince who broke a curse and now all the kingdoms in the land are expecting them to marry.

Wait, why the hell did I even stop this story. Urgh. That’s college for you.

OC-tober #15: Gabrielle/Gabby
“I wanted to take Arts, y’know. But I suck. There’s no major in Abstract. Or Origami.”

Okay, now this one wasn’t scrapped! Gabby is from my short story, Eraser from 2012! You can read it at my Inkitt. She’s the Engineering student who looked like she belongs in the Art department. I quote: ‘I feel like they should have cast you as Alice Cullen in the Twilight movies instead. The books described you.’ The story is about two best friends! I wrote it when it was requested by my own best friend. Anyways, Gabs is one of my fave girls just ‘cause she’s the sweetest. <3

OC-tober #16: Mel
“I’m here to hold my boyfie’s hand through this. Except he needs his hands to code. So maybe I’ll rub his back. Yup. That’s what I’ll do.”

OMG IT’S MEL. I wrote a novella called Johann Ramses Hercules back in NaNoWriMo 2011 about three dudes and their misadventures in college. It was kind of a graduation gift for myself and my two college best friends. Mel is Herc’s girlfriend. They met in an anime convention where she was one of a bunch of girls cosplaying an idol group. They’re both slightly socially-awkward nerds who weird their friends out a bit. In different ways. Herc is awkwardly shy and clueless. Mel is awkwardly bubbly and affectionate. WATCHING THEM TOGETHER IS A TRAINWRECK. THEY’RE SUCH FUN.

OC-tober #17: Prince
“She’s a firework. Like, I mean really a firework. Compact presentation but explodes and practically lights everything up.”

OC-tober #18: Emmy & Toni
“Maybe this pretty Miss Garland needs a ginger-haired pizza delivery girl to change her world.”

I started this story for NaNoWriMo 2013, working title: Triangles. I dropped it when instead I chose to focus on writing We Are Young, and then other projects followed and I never really picked this back up. There’s a fun little novel excerpt in Inkitt called ‘Pizza Girl’, though!

Prince is one of the side characters in the story. She’s a girl with two childhood best friends and ofc she falls for one of them and Prince. Darling. My Sweet. They’re both gay. For each other. I’m so sorry. Anyways, she’s badass so she owns it and supports them! That’s my bbygirl!

Fun fact: She’s actually the inspiration for Lucy wearing Natsu’s jacket in We Are Young. She’s always wearing one of her bf’s varsity jackets.

OC-tober #19: Yuki
“Dude. I’m a normal girl who moved into a new school and discovered that my boyfriend is a masked superhero – I’m straight out of a teenage novel too.”

Y’all know this queen, right? It’s Yuki! From my Late Luck short story and My Boyfriend Is A Superhero comics, just from the previous year. 🙂 What else do I say here? Um. Just.. yup! Her boyfriend may have the superpowers, but Yuki’s more badass. He thinks so too.

OC-tober #20 to 26: The Girls
“What about them… the girls? Shouldn’t someone stay behind to protect them-”
“Nah, I wouldn’t worry about that. They’ve got it covered.”

Posting this in advance to get it out of the way. They’re the girls from my YA/Runaways-inspired story Volunteers (working title i swear) that I started taking seriously just last year, 2015. This set doesn’t have ALL the girls in the team, but they’re my personal faves. I don’t have the complete plot for this story yet and tbh I’ve only written like… 1000 words about this thing. You can find full character descriptions in the original posts.

• Zoe, my MC, is the team’s badass normal, vice leader and strategist.
• Garnet is the resident earth-bender. She doesn’t speak up too often but is really protective of her team.
• Erin has electrokinesis and is team hacker, while her girlfriend Camille is omnilingual which makes them a great team.
• Clarisse has supersight and is Team Mom.
• Speedster Felicity is a former member of the team who still pops up every now and then to help out. She is the group’s bundle of sunshine who just wants everyone to get along and be happy. <3
• Dory, a technopath, is on a neverending road trip with her fellow runaway boyfriends. They call her team for backup sometimes. She’s the one who taught Erin her hacking skills.
• And Dove: the team’s contact when it comes to shady underground business and shit. She doesn’t often show up but when she does, she brings the badass. To say she’s good with guns is the understatement of the century.

OC-tober #27 to 30: Kassia, Aoife, Enda, Helen and Shai
“Girls. Uncle, the girls. Helen and Shai. They look at me and giggle to each other. It’s driving me insane.”
“Oh, please. You have it easy. Me, I spent a good deal of my teenage years running after Kassia, Enda and Aoife, pleading for them to not run headfirst towards danger. I tell them ‘Girls, that’s a dragon.’ What do they do? They look at me and giggle to each other… and then they attack the goddamn dragon.”

The last set! These are characters for my WIP novel, “The Road Home”. I started writing and working on them last 2014, and finished writing about half of the story. Now I’m revamping and cleaning up my outline and I’m planning to finish it for NaNoWriMo this year! ^-^)g

Kassia is a huntress with a list of places to go to, Aoife is a tattoo artist with a knack for weapons and fighting, Enda is a magical librarian-in-training on a job. They traveled together and had adventures when they were teens. Now, years later, Kassia’s and Enda’s son Page had set off for a journey of his own, accompanied by his shapeshifting companion Shai. When the novel starts, he’s already in the trip home, back to his parents and friends, one of whom is assistant librarian apprentice Helen. It’s a found family story, basically. ^-^) I can’t wait to get back to writing them and I also plan to be posting the chapters online.
