About FFD
Frail Frivolity Designs was a graphics design resource site theming primarily on anime, manga and japanese art, with some photography and typography. It was owned and maintained by me under my then online pseudonym: Koa-chan, as a teenager anime-manga and design enthusiast. It had many different experimental incarnations prior, but the site as it was known as “Frail-Frivolity Designs” went online from July 7, 2007, ran actively until 2011 and had since gone offline by 2012.

FFD featured free downloadable graphics like icons and wallpapers, resources such as brushes, stock photos and renders, and designs such as pre-made layouts for blogs/websites and layout templates. It served as my personal creative playground and its contents closely followed my then current interests.
A select few of those graphics/designs are here now:

Through its lifetime, Frail Frivolity Designs has had many signature looks!

01: Back in Black, Shining in Yellow
Late-October 2008 – Late-December 2008
The first layout of Frail Frivolity Designs since its comeback in the new domain and host. This Table layout is themed yellow and black, featuring a couple from Full Moon wo Sagashite! It’s tagline in “Back and Kickin’ in Dark Dark Black, Shining and Twinkling in Bright Bright Yellow.”

02: Tristan X Mordred
Late December 2008 – Late April 2009
Frail Frivolity Design’s second layout! It’s a simple Div layout themed red/pink/orange and blue/green featuring Code Geass R2’s Anya Alstreim and Gino Weinberg in the bright and flashy splash header. The title came from Gino’s Knightmare Frame “Tristan” and Anya’s “Mordred” because I very much loved those two together.

03: God’s Mistress
Late April 2009 – End of May 2009
Red, black, white, with flashes of yellows and oranges. God’s Mistress is a Div layout featuring Amane Misa from Death Note, light effects and flower outlines. This third layout is something I’m proud of, because of the simplistic abstract design in the backgrounds and effective typography.

04: With Strings Attached
April 2009 – End of October 2009
The court jester meets the prince, and the game starts – it never ends. — That’s what written in the header of “With Strings Attached”, a semi-psychedelic-colored table-based layout. It features rich blues, deep golds and dark reds with dashed of gray and cyan; together with Kuroshitsuji’s Ciel Phantomhive and the puppeteer Drocell. This layout has stayed a long time after receiving positive feedback and it was something FFD was always remembered for.

05: Sting Like a Bee
December 2009 – End of March 2010
A really experimental layout. I started off with an entirely different image, but then the backgrounds and the hues proved tricky, so I used this certain Shunya Yamashita creation, making a really eccentric-looking layout made of strong reds, pure whites and purples mixed with bright yellows. This layout was the first layout of Frail-Frivolity.Net so I specially aimed to take it all out and do everything to make it as funky and spunky as it is, to celebrate FFD’s new domain! ^_^

06: Less Than Three
April to late June 2010
Less than Three is neat, uncluttered and really really simple. It uses a color scheme of red, white and black, and the feature image is located at the bottom, featuring Art by Rie. Not much to say about it except that this layout was the one to see my summer update boom. ^_^ Plenty of new content each week plus the second Request Week – it’s something still worth remembering. <3

07: Pixie Dust
July to October 2010
Pixie Dust, themed green, gray and pink, aimed to emphasize the content and functionality of the site. It successfully did so, with the small compact header design and the three-column layout. It features one of FFD’s older renders. This layout also homed our 3rd Year Anniversary in which I launched a survey promo to assess FFD’s growth in the three years it has been around the net.

08: Serenity
November 2010 to March 2011
Serenity is an odd little layout I made – compact but spacey at the same time. I attacked the design with brushes and filters all over the place, ending up with a pink-and-blue-and-lavender thing that was… serene. It saw a quite inactive time for FFD, but at the same time, it also accommodated this site’s “home” feel to keep people coming. That said, I love “Serenity”.

09: No Smoking
April 2011 to Late October 2011
No Smoking features a bright blue-and-orange versus pale green-and-aqua color scheme. The featured character is the ever-awesome Badou Nails from DOGS: Bullet & Carnage. It’s a very simple layout – almost minimalist, with fixed navigation on the right, a humongous content space, and still some Twitter snippets to the left, along of course with the credits and some buttons. This version is the proudest one of my set yet in the “Best-Looking-for-Widescreens” category. π

10: CHIC
November 2011
CHIC features a splash header image of art by Shunya Yamashita and committed to a girly-grunge aesthetic with bold magenta and purple combined with muted grays. It’s got a fixed sidebar right under the header that also house latest tweets and all the links a visitor would need. It’s a good “back to basics” type layout that was a breath of fresh air. This was kept on throughout FFD’s inactivity and eventual closing.
The Webring
During its run, Frail Frivolity Designs was part of an online community of anime, manga, game graphic design enthusiasts and lovers, and had plenty of affiliate, sibling and linked sites. The community often went to each other’s sites and left messages, showed support, shared tips, downloaded each other’s work and generally hyped each other up!
Most of these sites have either gone defunct or been turned into personal portfolios as of time of archiving (2026), but I still have their buttons and addresses saved – so here’s a little memento of those amazing websites of the 00’s, which were all full of individuality and style. Hover for info!
